Community Water Center

Community-driven water solutions through organizing, education, and advocacy

Build the Movement

This holiday season, help make sure access to safe water is a human right for all Californians

Californians without safe drinking water are stepping up their advocacy for water justice. We need your support so our community partners can continue building and leading campaigns for safe, clean, and affordable drinking water. Now is your opportunity to build the water justice movement by making a year-end gift to the Community Water Center! Our goal is to raise $20,000 before 2015.

Yolanda Serrato
Many drought-impacted families are relying on donated water to prepare for the holidays. Yolanda Serrato stands by a donated water tank with CWC Co-Director Susana De Anda to speak out about the need for emergency relief and lasting water solutions.

The holidays are a hard time for families without safe drinking water. In East Porterville, Yolanda Serrato’s family had to scale down her Thanksgiving dinner because her well had run dry. To host even a small Thanksgiving dinner in her home, Yolanda relied on donated bottled water to make coffee, to cook the meal, and to drink. To brush her teeth, flush the toilet, or wash her hands, Yolanda still has to use non-potable water from a donated tank in her backyard.

When the drought hit small San Joaquin Valley communities hard, we rallied our community partners and began a strong campaign for drought relief. We connected Yolanda to reporters at national news outlets, including The New York TimesUnivisión, and The Weather Channel (check out this morning's show!). Yolanda has now shared the story of her dry well far and wide, and she’s a strong advocate for both immediate and lasting drought solutions. Our staff and community partners advocated successfully for both state assistance to private well owners and free bottled water deliveries to low-income residents. Thanks to our efforts, Yolanda doesn’t have to spend her limited holiday budget on water.

Water storage tanks and bottled water are crucial lifelines for people without water, but we know California can do better. Together, we helped ensure county and state funding was available for community drinking water needs. Now we need to makes sure these communities have the funds necessary to develop lasting water solutions.

Please support the community-led water justice movement with a holiday gift of $25, $50, or $100 to the Community Water Center today. We’re depending on people like you to help us continue connecting communities with the resources they need for both emergency relief and permanent water solutions.
